Shut

Privacy policy

Shut exists to keep private details off your screen, so it's built to know as little about you as possible. This page says exactly what is stored and what is sent.

Last updated October 17, 2026

The short version

  • Your list of private details stays in your browser, on your computer. It is never sent to us or anyone else.
  • The free version sends nothing over the internet.
  • If you buy Pro, the extension sends your license key and a random ID for your browser to our license server. Nothing else.
  • There are no ads, no analytics, and no tracking in the extension or on this website.

Shut is made by Atremo Studios LLC, in the United States. “We” on this page means Atremo Studios LLC.

What the extension stores on your computer

Everything below is saved in your browser's own extension storage, on your device. It isn't synced to your other devices, and we can't read it.

  • Your list: the names, addresses, and other details you ask Shut to cover, and any shortcuts you give them.
  • Your settings: which kinds of detection are on, the cover style, paused and covered sites, parts of pages you chose to hide, and text you marked as not private.
  • A random install ID: a random string made on your device. It doesn't identify you and is only used if you activate Pro.
  • Your license key and Pro pass, if you activate Pro.

Removing the extension deletes all of it. A backup file, if you make one, is saved wherever you choose and stays under your control.

How pages are read

To cover private details, the extension reads the text of the pages you open. This happens inside your browser. Page text, your browsing history, and what you type are never sent anywhere and never leave your computer.

With Pro's image check on, the extension also reads text inside images. This is done by a text reader built into the extension, on your computer. To read an image, the extension requests that image again from the website it's on, the same way your browser already did. No image is sent to us or to any other service.

What is sent if you use Pro

Activating Pro sends two things to our license server:

  • your license key, and
  • the random install ID for that browser.

The server answers with a signed pass that unlocks Pro for 7 days. The extension renews it about once a day in the background by sending the same two things again. A key works in one browser at a time, so the server keeps the install ID of the browser it's in and the dates it moved to a different one.

The license server and this website run on Cloudflare. Like any web server, it sees the internet address each request comes from. It counts requests per address for a minute at a time, to stop anyone guessing license keys, and Cloudflare keeps a short-lived log of requests to the server for a few days, which we use only to fix problems. Your internet address is never saved with your license.

On Firefox, the browser asks your permission before the first license check.

What we keep when you buy Pro

Pro is sold through Lemon Squeezy, which takes the payment as the seller and emails your receipt and license key. It collects your payment details under its own privacy policy, and we never see your card number. From a purchase we receive and keep:

  • the email address you bought with, so we can help if you lose your license key,
  • the order number, so refunds can be matched to a license,
  • the license key itself, the dates it was issued or refunded, the random install ID of the browser it's active in, and the dates it moved to a different one.

We use these only to run licensing and answer support requests. We don't sell them or share them for advertising.

This website

This site uses no analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies. The test page checks whether the extension is covering text in your own browser; what it shows and anything you type there stays on your computer.

Your choices

  • Use the free version and nothing is ever sent.
  • Remove your license in the extension's settings at any time.
  • Ask us to delete the email address and license records tied to your purchase. Pro stops renewing once they're deleted.

For privacy questions and deletion requests, write to support@shutprivacy.com.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and any change to what the extension sends will also be described in the extension's release notes.
